US online DVD rental company Blockbuster is currently testing its planned in-store kiosk that will allow customers to download movies directly to mobile devices within seconds. The long term plan is to have the kiosks be compatible with any portable device.
Blockbuster will only be able to launch the kiosk service once it has ironed out studio rights and anti-piracy technology.
Still on the subject of digital distribution, both Disney and News Corp are predicting that movies will be released on video-on-demand platforms on cable and the Internet simultaneous to their DVD and Blu-ray disc release. (Source: Studio Briefing).
