Project Canvas, the BBC’s digital TV video-on-demand (VOD) joint venture with BT, ITV Channel 4 and Channel Five, is being accused by the Digital TV Group of failing to create an open, industry-wide technology standard for the service.

Samsung, Sony, Pace and Dixons are among the 100 companies represented by The Digital TV Group.

According to The Guardian, one of the Digital TV Group’s main gripes is that Project Canvas does not involve set top box and TV manufacturers.

Project Canvas was originally created around the premise that the service would be provided on an open specification, available to viewers with Freeview and Freesat set top boxes.

The Digital TV Group maintains that Project Canvas is developing a separate standard with its preferred partners.
