Hollywood studios win piracy case

The six studios represented by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) – Paramount, Sony, Fox, Universal, Walt Disney and Warner Bros - have won a copyright infringement lawsuit amounting to $110m against file-sharing websiteTorrentSpy. The website was found guilty of 3,699 illegal downloads.

According to the MPAA, the worldwide motion picture industry, including foreign and domestic producers, distributors, theaters, video stores and pay-per-view operators lose more than $18bn annually as a result of movie theft. More than $7bn in losses are attributed to illegal Internet distributions, while $11bn is the result of illegal copying and bootlegging.
