Romance knocks Avatar off its top US perch

While Avatar is still riding No 1 position at the South African boxoffice, in the US it has been knocked out of the top position by romance. Dear John with Tatum Channing and Amanda Seyfried has taken top spot is a 2010 American romantic drama/war film directed by Lasse Hallstrom. The film is an adaptation of Nicholas Sparks’ novel of the same name.

It shows the life of a young woman (Amanda Seyfried) after she falls in love with a soldier (Channing Tatum). They decide to exchange letters to each other after he is deployed to the war. By all accounts it is a tearjerker but fortunately it takes a few unexpected paths which seem to add some depth to what could otherwise be a rather soppy film

The Sony/Screen Gems' release of the Relativity production took in an estimated $13.8 million on Friday 5 February in 2,969 theatres.

Meanwhile, Avatar, which has received nine Oscar nominations, shifted into second place for the Friday as it picked up an additional $6.2 million.
