Ever since the financial and managerial crisis at public broadcaster SABC started becoming consistent headline news last year, frequent references have been made to the fact that the SABC appears to be grossly over-staffed. This issue again came to light on 4 February in Pretoria, when Communications Minister Siphiwe Nyanda responded to the Ministerial Task Team report into the SABC and financially strapped parastatal signal distributor Sentech.
Minister Nyanda described the public broadcaster as “staff heavy” and noted that senior positions were held by people who were close to retirement age. He did not confirm whether certain staff members at both the SABC and Sentech would be retrenched.
