On 1 July Parliament decided to recommend to President Jacob Zuma that he dissolve the board of beleaguered public broadcaster SABC. Parliament also recommends that the financial mismanagement that led to a deficit of R839m for the 2008/09 financial year be investigated by the Auditor General.

The last few months have seen a mass exodus of board members, leaving only one, Alison Gillwald, who has not resigned.

The Mail & Guardian quoted a comment from former board member Nadia Bulbulia who said in a written submission to the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Communications, that the crisis was due to “the culmination of deep-rooted systemic defects in the machinery of the SABC".
