South African art house circuit Cinema Nouveau commenced its 3rd Season of Opera on 5 November at its Cedar Square multiplex in Fourways, Johannesburg, with the Metropolitan Opera’s live HD production of Giacomo Puccini’s Tosca.

Directed by Luc Bondy and starring Karita Mattila (Finland), Marcelo A’lvarez (Argentina) and George Gagnidze (Republic of Georgia), this production of Tosca was recorded live in HD at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York on 10 October and simultaneously transmitted to various cities around the world. It features backstage activities on the night, with opera star Susan Graham conducting interviews with the three leads as they come off stage.

Tosca is currently on circuit and is followed by eight more productions from The Met: Live in HD series. They are: Verdi’s Aida (from 27 November), Puccini’s Turandot (from 18 December), Offenbach’s Les Contes D’hoffman (from 15 January), Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier (from 5 February), Bizet’s Carmen (from 19 February), Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra (from 12 March), Thomas’ Hamlet (from 16 April) and Rossini’s Armida (from 28 May).
