According to the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers (AMPTP), Hollywood is in a ‘de facto’ strike as of 1 July, when the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) contract expired. In a statement, the AMPTP says that little work is now available to SAG members as Hollywood studios have shut down virtually all feature film production, with TV production winding down as well.
Meanwhile, SAG has not yet issued a strike authorisation vote to its members. It has just received the AMPTP’s final offer for a new contract, which is very similar to the deal struck with the Writers Guild of America (WGA), the Directors Guild of America (DGA) and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA).
SAG is expected to respond only after 8 July, once AFTRA announces the results of a ratification vote on its own contract with the AMPTP. Meanwhile SAG has been urging those of its members who also hold AFTRA membership not to ratify the AMPTP deal.
