SAG contract expires

Fri, 27 Jun 2008

Hollywood is bracing itself for a possible shut down in production as the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) and the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers (AMPTP) have not yet come to agreement on a new contract. The current SAG contract expires on 30 June.

The only tangible result after weeks of negotiation is accusations on both sides. SAG has accused the AMPTP of offering a union contract worth tens of millions of dollars less than the one it signed with SAG’s sister union, the American Federation of Televison & Radio Artists (AFTRA). The AMPTP has accused SAG of deliberately stalling and trying to derail its deal with AFTRA.

SAG has been urging those of its members who also hold AFTRA membership to vote against the AFTRA / AMPTP deal. The vote will take place on 8 July. Hollywood has spent most of this year trying to recover from the devasting effects of the recent writers’ strike. (Sources: Studio Briefing, Variety)
