SES opens new Africa office

SCREEN AFRICA EXCLUSIVE: Global satellite operator SES has opened an office in Johannesburg with newly appointed Africa head Ibrahima Guimba-Saidou at the helm. The office is situated at Montecasino and will complement two other SES offices in Africa – one in Ghana and another to be opened in an East African city yet to be confirmed.
Orange African Social Venture Prize

Mobile weather service for Ugandan fishermen

A unique partnership combining mobile technology, weather forecasting and local know-how is providing a localised weather alert service to fishing villages on Lake Victoria, Uganda. The partnership involves the Uganda Department of Meteorology (UDoM), World Meteorological Organization (WMO), South African mobile telecommunications company MTN, Ericsson, National Lake Rescue Institute (NLRI) and the Kalangala Fishing community.
Hindi content in East Africa

Zuku, the East African three-in-one service provider, has signed a deal with Pamoja Telcom to launch Hindi- language comedy channel SAB TV on its cable and DTH service. With over 100,000 Asians in Kenya alone there is real demand for Hindi programming, something that Zuku is keen to address with this latest deal, which follows on from the Zee and Star deals which made Indian programming widely available in the region for the first time.
East African business sector grows

In a recent report conducted and released by the World Bank’s International Finance Corporation, East Africa’s business sector has shown a positive improvement between 2010 and 2011, with further improvement expected in the forthcoming years leading up to 2030.
