South Africa at Cannes

Fri, 11 Apr 2008

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) will once again host the South African pavilion at the Cannes International Film Festival (14 - 15 May) in partnership with the National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF). At the time of going to print, the NFVF was not able to provide a list of the South African films that will go to Cannes. This information will be made available by the NFVF in April.

The NFVF will also host a co-production conference at the festival. "The theme is South Africa as a co-producing partner of choice, in celebration of South Africa's 11 years at the festival," says Tshegofatsi Moduba, marketing spokesperson for the NFVF. The DTI's recently introduced new production incentives will also be explained and marketed at the conference.

Moduba says the new incentive scheme is good news for filmmakers. "We now have an incentive scheme that begins to address the concerns of the local industry in developing local content."

"It also begins to address the NFVF's strategy which is that South Africa has to produce at least 15 to 20 feature films annually if we are to have a sustainable industry that creates jobs."
