Mozambican production company Ebano Multimedia will soon start shooting a feature film titled Virgin Margarida. Written and directed by Licinio Azevedo, the film is being produced by Pedro Pimenta, a well-known filmmaker in the Southern African region.

The film tells the story of a young girl caught between events that will change her destiny forever in Mozambique just after independence. In a time of radical social and political transformation, in which people are judged by their ideological stance, she maintains the ingenuity of her peasant background. She has to die for people around her to realise that life goes beyond the good intentions of any ideology.

Casting for the film is in progress and some of the country’s top actors will be in it. Azevedo said that the original story was written eight years ago and was inspired by research he did for one of his documentaries. “The current script has been developed over the past three years partly in collaboration with DV8 Films’ script workshops. Financing the project started two years ago.”

Virgin Margarida is not an entirely Mozambican film as it’s described as ‘a standard co-production with Portugal and France”. The budget, he said, was ‘in line with current practice of feature film production in Africa”.
Describing the film’s script, he said: “This is a unique, universal story set in an atmosphere of enormous social and political tension. I believe audiences will appreciate its closeness with real historical events. Also, the drama takes place mostly amongst women. This is a story of women in a time when men decide their destiny.”
